I am not the guy who cooks nor can I ever imagine myself cooking. Not in a million years. But I love cooking for my dog. This has changed me considerably, not only do I enjoy cooking from time to time, my dog really loves it. When I say I enjoy cooking, I don’t mean I am good at it. I am horrible. But you don’t need masterchef level cooking skills to whip up a delicious meal for your dog. If you can work out the chopper and the pressure cooker and buy meat and vegetables you are all set. That’s the exhaustive list of skill sets needed to DIY dog food.

Dogs have a completely different set of nutritional requirements when compared to us humans.

What dogs need in a meal (or breakup of most of the dog food recipes)

  • 50% cooked protein (meat, seafood, dairy or eggs)
  • 25% cooked produce (cereals or grains)
  • 25% complex carbohydrates (vegetables and fiber)
  • Some essential fatty acids and minerals (egg yolk or oatmeal)

Each breed has different nutritional requirements to consider. Plus, many purebreds are known to be more prone to food allergies. Always work with a pup professional you trust. It’s also a good idea to transition dogs slowly when introducing a new diet. Though they’ll beg you otherwise with those big, beautiful eyes, only give them a little new food at a time to prevent stomach upset.

This recipe has the above mentioned ratios, but feel free to tweak it a little bit for your dog. It’s always a good idea to personalize recipes as per your dog’s requirements

Once you’ve made your batch, you can divide them up into single servings, note the date, and freeze it. When ready to serve, you can defrost it in the fridge overnight and nuke it for 15-30 seconds. That’s it! Now who knew that making dog food would be this easy?

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 1/2 cups brown/white rice

  • 3 cups spinach, chopped

  • Let cool completely.
  • Voila, DIY dog food is ready
